History
Charlottetown was named Abegweit by Mikmaq Indians. The name Abegweit means cradle on the waves. On the other hand, the French called the city the ill St Jean while its English name was St John Island. From the year 1799, the city was called Prince Edward Island. The British acquired the island after the treaty of Paris in the year 1763. The first assignment of the British was to survey the area and Captain Samuel Holland who was appointed survey general of the area did this (De Giacomo, 2004). He was appointed with this positions and also given the task to survey other British land all over the world. Captain Holland was the one who chose the site where Charlottetown is located and suggested the name Charlottetown. The city is named after Charlotte; queen consort of UK .This was to honor queen charlotte the wife of George 3 of England.
Charlottetown is a city in Canada and the largest city in Edward Island.. The city was incorporated as a town 1855 and later a city in the year 1855. Charlottetown is widely known as the site of Charlottetown conference in the year 1864 where Canadian and Maritime political leaders came together to discuss the maritime union (De Giacomo, 2004). The motto “Cunabula Foederis” is adapted from the city.
Economy
The staff works with all sectors of government, public and private sector to ensure economic aspects of the city are enhanced. Staffs are available hence they ensure they respond to all questions and provide necessary information for supporting business (Taylor, 1999). The economy of Charlottetown is mostly influenced by the public sector. The important employers of Charlottetown are provincial, federal and municipal sectors of the government. Technology companies also play a major part in improving the economy of the city (Day, 2008). However, their numbers are not that great compared since call centers are excluded. In addition, light manufacturing such as chemical, biotechnology and machining have contributed greatly to the economy.
Community and Culture
Charlottetown is situated on Prince Edward Island at the south shore. It is off the east shore of Canada and separated from the main land by Northumberland straight. The city is at the center and very easy to access. People drive to all major accessible points within 45minutes. The population of Charlottetown is 60,000 people and it covers an area of 44.33km2. It is the capital City of Prince Edward Island and the birth place of confederation (Mills, 2005). Charlottetown has great history and it is the center of provision and federal government. The city hubs commerce, technology and educational institutions. Tourist comment on the comfort and beauty they experience while visiting Charlottetown. People of Charlottetown have a sense of hospitality and community that make tourists have peace of mind. This has made tourists have memorable moments whenever they visit Charlottetown.
Literature review
Charlottetown is a good example of a charming seaside city. The city contains various historical charm and various festive celebrations. The citizens are proud of their city as they embrace their manicured lawns, beautiful flowers and trees lined up in the city. Charlottetown connects to the past as it continues the tradition of hospitality and people feel a sense of belonging in the city. Charlottetown is not only concentrated in the past since its celebrations and festivals continues up to today (Day, 2008). Confederation center of arts hosts the winning award of Anne Green Gables. Canada holds its birthday on July 1 by celebrating festival of lights, as it is the biggest bash east of Ottawa. The festival is held on three days comprising of fireworks and international buskers. Charlottetown holds a network of walking trails, craft shops and restaurants that reflects the island sea food and agricultural products. There are high standard golf courses and rides that take people through the streets of Charlottetown
Collection and Analysis
The proposed method of research is qualitative research method because it is significant in analyzing Charlottetown city by putting into consideration all factors. Use of secondary data and research helped in the preparation of this thesis as the topic demanded an in-depth knowledge about Charlottetown’s demography, history, economy, culture and religion and its influence to the world. Such vital research is only possible through secondary data searches. This topic analyses the methods that are used in the research process. The research strives to undertake an in depth analysis of Charlottetown geographical factors. In this study, using a qualitative research technique would be ideal in order to understand the importance of studying Charlottetown history as a base for future further studies is also provided.
Rationale
Charlottetown has been evolving from the late 18th century and to date it still is. People from all over the world have settled in the town. Charlottetown has placed new laws in order to maintain the ever-growing interaction of people from different parts of the world. These are facts proving that improvement of Charlottetown affects the daily life of every human and any activity that involves people from different geographical locations. Business that import and export goods from and to Charlottetown have enjoyed enormous profits. They have to assess their business procedure in relation to the expanding and changing markets.
Recommendations
Charlottetown city needs to take an integrated community sustainability plan. This will be achieved by engaging with the community together with external stakeholders. The objective of the plan is to ensure that the city has a forward thinking plan that ensures the community realizes is economical, social and environmental objectives. The plan will involve implementation both internally and external consultation by the community. It is the mandate of the city to collaborate with the community for the successful implementation of the plan.
Conclusion
Charlottetown has been evolving from the late 18th century and to date it still is. In the year 1758 during the height of French and Indian war, the British took over the settlement and the rest of the island. They were able to deport any French settlers. Census that was conducted in the year 2006 registered 32,174 residents in Charlottetown. 45.5% of whom were men and 54.5% were women while 4.3% accounted for children below five years. People from all over the world have settled in the town. People from all over the world have settled in the town. Business that import and export goods from and to Charlottetown have enjoyed enormous profits.
