Dear Dr. Sinclair,
As a worker for a homeless shelter with five years of experience working in transitional housing, domestic shelters and emergencies, it is with great interest that I apply for the position of Outreach and Events Associate in your esteemed organization.
Currently, I hold a Shelter coordination position at WetheFuture Community Outreach Service. Here my roles include registering new entrants, issuing identification badges, issuing linen, storing clients, and personal items, and explaining shelter policies and rules. Essentially, I do everything within my capacity to assist the new entrants in settling in the 30-bed capacity institution. Additionally, I am tasked with carrying out daily check-in and check-outs in the organization’s ERP system. Moreover, I escort clients to services or health appointments and perform random walk-throughs to ensure all rules are being observed and everybody is safe. As the Shelter Coordinator, I participate in assessments and case reviews on a need basis.
This builds upon my time as an assistant associate at Peace Wellness Center and my post-graduate internship at Hope Transitional Center. The positions have assisted me in developing strong interpersonal skills, communication skills and listening skills. I have also developed the ability to seek practical solutions and empathy.
In addition to my professional experience, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. I have a strong passion for helping the homeless that stems from seeing my favorite Uncle become an alcoholic, lose his license to practice law, and end up homeless on the streets after the death of his beloved wife. His experience has shaped my perception of homelessness and drives my desire to help other homeless people.
