Assignment #1 – Module 1
Figure 1. My Symbol
Basing on the activities that I engage in currently in my life, I significantly decided to choose the above symbol. I chose the above symbol because it can be easily be interpreted by my audience. In the lower part of this symbol, we can see a heap of soil. The mound represents loam soil suitable for fast and firm growth of seedlings. There are two leaves on my symbol above, and a shoot supported by a short stem; the two plates, branch, and shoot represent seedlings of any environmental plants.
On top of my symbol is the phrase ‘FIRM GROWTH,’ this is used to positively describe the kind of seedlings produced in terms of quality and physical appearance. Moreover,on the above symbol’s left side is a word written ‘SEEDLINGS,’ which describes 70% of my symbol showing the main thing to be tree seedlings. For instance, one might choose this symbol to use, for example, an agribusiness firm. Using this symbol will help in merely communicating with the clients. Other environmental factors also influenced my choice; trees are a primary or rather very essential element in our environment. We human beings and other living organisms depend on oxygen, which is produced by plants. Trees also help to take in carbon (Co2), reducing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere.
My main goal for choosing the above symbol was to mobilize my fellow youth to join or form groups for a county government’s seedling sponsored project. My other anticipated achievement was to encourage youths to create their income source by engaging in the tree seedling business. Making people understand the importance of trees in the environment was my other target. Having dwelled in the same environment with my peers and with my symbol’s simplicity, I trust that they will have the same interpretation as mine. The intended meaning was to make my audience understand that the seedlings we produce are viable and suitable for all environments; I also wanted to communicate about the new seedling firm to the people.
Besides, upon choosing the above symbol, it was influenced by specific cultural and societal aspects; the heap of soil shows loam soil believed by my culture to be fertile and suitable for tree farming. The green leaves represent the green color, which is firmly accepted by the people to represent peace. The majority of the people in my society believe trees to be water catchment and protection against strong winds, causing destruction and damages.
My own culture also believes that other trees could sometimes be used as herbs to cure diseases; this impacted the use of a seedling in my symbol. Our society believes in marketing communication for proper awareness; thus, using the word ‘FIRM GROWTH’ and ‘SEEDLINGS’ communicate and market the quality seedlings that we produce.
I think my image is a symbol because its meaning must be culturally learned; it is because my symbol can be interpreted differently in other cultures and situations. Some use the three seedling symbol to represent life, prosperity, and others to represent wisdom, but I have used it to describe a firm dealing with plant seedlings.
