Epistemology

  1. Drawing on this PowerPoint lecture and the epistemological metaphor chart in this module, summarize (in one paragraph each) Positivism, Constructivism and Critical Theory.
  2. Watch the following three teaching videos and describe the underlying epistemology demonstrated in each video. Use the Epistemology Metaphor Chart to help you identify the epistemological assumptions. Foreachvideo, write a paragraph or two describing which epistemology the teaching in each video most enacts.
  3. In 1-2 paragraphs, reflect on which epistemology you are most attracted to/and or familiar with.

Progress of a 5 gallon aquarium

In this assignment, you will observe the progress of a 5 gallon aquarium  that utilizes no filtering or CO2. Instead it tries to reproduce what  would happen in a natural pond. You DO NOT have to do a tank yourself  (but if you like fish and feel inspired this is a great video series to  watch). You will watch the progress videos form the assigned video  series, and contribute to the assignment journal, considering the  questions posed for each video.

Watch the videos corresponding to 6 and 7th months. What is happening to  the population? How does this relate to what you observed in the plant  population during earlier months? What effect do you think the increase  in population may have on the aquarium if it is not managed?

Athenian democracy

What is your view of Athenian democracy?

You should give your own view and  defend it. Specifically, you should discuss both the strengths and  weaknesses of Athenian democracy. But it is not enough to describe them  respectively. You have to give an overall assessment, addressing the  benefits in light of the costs.

Note that you should write an  analytical summary, not a descriptive one. You should organize information  logically around a contested claim. For more detailed requirements and  grading criteria, please refer to the Grading Rubric in the syllabus.

Things  are often complex and cannot be understood in simple black-and-white  terms. You should try to give a historically informed, ideologically  unbiased, and logically coherent answer. The historical context cannot  be overemphasized. It is easy to dwell on generalities out of context.  It is also easy to see things from one’s own ideological perspective and  rush to condemn alternative ones without trying to understand them. You  can always disagree but should show respect. It is more important to  help contribute to a greater understanding of the question at issue.  Finally, it is easier to speak coherently, but a lot more difficult to  write coherently. Make sure that you move logically from sentence to  sentence and consistently from paragraph to paragraph. Do not deviate  from your focus. Whatever you write should be directly relevant to the  prompt

Venn diagrams can be a useful way to display the results of a survey with multiple questions. At a glance, one can get a general feel of the ways in which the experiences and/or knowledge of a group of people overlap. In this project, you will collect data in a survey and then use a Venn diagram to analyze the results.

Action Items

  • Create an anonymous short survey as follows:
    • Create three questions that can each be answered with either “Yes” or “No” only.
    • Example questions:
      • Do you have/live with a dog?  [cat, pet, etc]
      • Do you own your own home?
      • Have you changed jobs within the last 3 years?
      • Have you ever traveled to a country outside of the one in which you currently live?
      • Do you speak more than one language?
      • Do you belong to a gym/fitness club?
      • Have you exercised 3 times in the past 7 days?
      • Have you made an online purchase within the past 30 days?
      • Within the past five years, have you attended a professional sporting event?
      • Within the past five years, have you been on a cruise?
        • Associate each question with a set identifier A, B, C
        • Add one more question to capture a demographic characteristic that divides your responses into two sets, for example: male or female, under 25 or 25 and over, under 40 or 40 and over, under 60 or 60 and over, student or non-student, etc.
  • Using the same survey for all respondents, collect data from at least 40 subjects.
    • Please do not collect any self-identifying information (such as names and email addresses), as it is not necessary for this assignment.
    • Responses may be collected electronically using a short email or social media post, through an online survey or data collection tool such as Microsoft forms, Responses may be collected electronically using a short email or social media post, through an online survey or data collection tool such as Microsoft Forms, Google Forms, or similar, via a paper form, or even verbally (interviews).
    • You may choose to offer an opt-out response for the demographic characteristic such as “prefer not to answer,” but you must collect a minimum of 10 responses in each of the two categories and a minimum of 40 total responses.
    • Subjects may include family, coworkers, relatives, friends (or your kids’ friends), classmates, teammates, random people you encounter, etc.
  • Download the Excel template Download the Excel templateand record your responses. See the example below.
  • Complete the summary table on the Excel template:
    • Identify all possible combinations of responses for your survey

Module 3: 5-4-3-2-1 Reflection Assignment 2 Due Next Week

Purpose

This assignment is intended to help you learn to:

  • Organize and process the information you learned in this module’s readings.
  • Reimagine material for future personal or social benefit.

Overview

Considering what you learned this module, you’ll write 5 categories of reflections about the information we covered.

Action Items

  • Consider what you learned in this unit and write the “5-4-3-2-1” response, outlined below:
    • 5 bullets of what you learned to expect from students in your licensure area.
    • 4 bullets of what you learned about your actions as a teacher in the classroom.

Module 3: Annotated Bibliography Assignment 3

Purpose

Briefly summarize the source and/or explain why it is important to a topic

Overview

Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you’re forced to read each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. At the professional level, annotated bibliographies allow you to see what has been done in the literature and where your own research or scholarship can fit.

Tasks

  • Write annotated bibliographies for three peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Read the Overview in Module 2 Preparation.
  • Read the annotated bibliography example Download annotated bibliography example.
  • Write the annotated bibliographies for 3 articles (some of them need to be quantitative, others can be qualitative) using a combined informative/evaluation style.
  • For each of the 3 bibliographies, include the following information:
  • Bibliographic information of the source using the APA 7 style.
  • Provide the source summary and analysis (1-2 paragraphs).
      • What is the general research topic of the article?
      • What is the aim of the study?
      • What are the research methods (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed) used in this research?
      • What theory is described as a theoretical underpinning of the research?
      • What are the main arguments?
          • Be sure to list the research findings and suggestions for future research and future practice.
    • Evaluate the article (1 paragraph).
      • Is it a useful source?
      • Is the information reliable?
      • Is the source biased or objective?
    • Reflect on the article (1 paragraph).
      • How does it fit into your research?
      • How does it help you shape your argument?
      • How can you use this source in your research?
      • Has it changed how you think about the topic?

Module 3: Journal Article Critique Due Next Week  Assignment 4

Purpose

  • Evaluate academic research about educational leadership
  • Relate research findings to the focus area of your program

Overview

In this assignment, you are to search a journal in the field of educational leadership and find an empirical research article that is of interest to you, then identify the major parts of the article.

Some of the sources that can help you identify a potential article are listed below:

  • The LibGuideLinks to an external site. contains the list of journals in educational leadership.
  • Google ScholarLinks to an external site. is a great tool for starting your search.
Google Scholar: the unlimited guideLinks to an external site. provides guidelines how to use Google Scholar effectively and efficiently.
  • Contact the library using their chat window and ask for help with locating relevant databases, journals, and other sources.

Tasks

  • Search a journal in the field of educational leadership and find an empirical research article that is of interest to you, then identify the major parts of the article.
  • Reflect upon the results presented and their implication in relation to the focus area of your program.
  • Follow the guiding questions:
    • What is the type of research (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods)?
      • Note: If you have chosen a mixed methods research, you should analyze qualitative and quantitative strands separately.
    • Is there a statement of the problem in the Introduction?
    • Is the educational significance of the problem discussed in the Introduction?
    • Is the review of the related literature comprehensive?
    • Are all cited refences relevant to the problem under investigation?
    • What is (are) the research question(s) (or hypothesis)? (hypotheses apply to quantitative research only)
    • Describe the sample used in this study.
    • How was the data analyzed?
    • What is (are) the major finding(s)?

Q & A

Q1 (brothers)

Should classroom teachers have the freedom to change, adapt, and take advantage of unique opportunities for learning as they evolve within the adopted curriculum? If “good teaching” is more than just delivering the curriculum as it is written, how might a teacher add value or increase accessibility to these parts of the lesson:

  • the introduction
  • teacher directed (I do)
  • teacher guided (we do)
  • independent practice (you do)
  • closing

Consider prior knowledge, supplemental materials (digital or hard copy), Universal Design for Learning, etc. It may be helpful to work through an actual lesson plan as you answer this.

Q2 (Cheryl)

1. What were the ideals of the Enlightenment, and how did these ideals shape the Atlantic Revolutions discussed in chapter 16 (focus on the beginning of the chapter)?

2. What was revolutionary about the American Revolution?

3. How did the French Revolution differ from the American?

4.  In your estimation, was the Haitian Revolution more similar to the AMERICAN Revolution or to the FRENCH Revolution?  Explain by highlighting the specifics of the revolution in Haiti in relation to either the American or the French (which one you deem to be “more similar” to the Haitian).

Q3 (Cheryl)

  • Students will identify the cultures and societies (plural) of West Africa
  • Students will evaluate West Africa’s development from pre-colonial times to the present day.

Q4 (Cheryl)

the causes of political, social, and military conflict in West Africa.

Q5 (Cheryl)

Natadecha-Sponsel talks about, in “Individualism as an American Cultural Value,” the role of communalism (e.g. focus on the group/community) as opposed to individualism. What do you see as the role of these two values in East Asia? And how do they compare to at least one of the other societies that we’ve talked about

Q6 (Cheryl)

Black Panther is about a futuristic society that avoided the calamities of European colonialism and thus, through control of their own resources and technological innovation, its people were able to thrive and far exceed the progress of other global societies.

While this is fictional (a brand of storytelling called Afrofuturism), it reflects a way of considering the role of contingency in the past (e.g. how could things have been different).

Embracing this approach (but with a more historically-based approach), how might things have been different in Haiti if foreign countries had not insisted on intervening on a near-constant basis. You can use traditional narrative or tell a fictional story about the place that would exist.

Q7 (Cheryl)

Students will identify the cultures and societies (plural) of East Asia

Q8 (Cheryl)

Students will assess the relationship between Europe and the world

Q9 (Cheryl)

Students will assess the relationship between Mexico and the rest of North America.

Students will describe the development of Mexico as a multi-ethnic society.

Q10 (des)

Misery presents a chilling portrait of fan obsession and the perceived ownership that fans can feel over celebrities. How does Annie Wilkes represent the extreme end of parasocial relationships? In what ways does her character reflect the entitlement that fans sometimes feel toward their favorite creators?

Apply psychological theories to analyze Annie’s behavior. How does her isolation and personal instability contribute to her violent actions? Discuss how the film critiques the darker side of fandom and the celebrity-fan dynamic.

Q10 (des)

Students will identify the cultures and societies (plural) of East Asia

Q11 (neva)

North Carolina is the state

You will choose one state to explore the data and summarize the key findings. Topics include demographics, earnings, education, family, etc. Please select any state other than North Carolina. Tip: By clicking on the “Show Full Report” button, you can view the data in multiple formats (charts, tables, or maps).

Q12 (Neva)

Social media platforms have become powerful tools for shaping public opinion. Share an example of a recent social media campaign or viral event. How did it influence societal perspectives or policies?

Q13 (terrance)

This post will be two well-written paragraphs (minimum of five sentences each). In the first paragraph, you will choose one of the following to discuss:

  • Directives
  • Criticism
  • Apologies
  • Compliments

In your first paragraph, you will begin by establishing which of the four you chose. Then you will elaborate on what you learned (google search) about that type of verbal communication, but you will use four bold words to describe the type you selected.

In the second paragraph, you will give a personal example from your life when you saw your chosen word (explained in the first paragraph) happen. This can be an example of when it went well or when it didn’t, but make sure that you conclude this paragraph by clarifying what makes it go well according to the information you found. Lastly, how does this impact intercultural communication?

Q14 (tina)

Discuss the effects of China’s One child policy in terms of the population age structure and the sustainability of the country. What effects were seen as a result of the policy? What policy changes were implemented later on?

Q15 (tina)

Explain why industrialization led to exponential growth of human populations. Make sure to mention what factors changed with industrialization that allowed for human population growth.

APPS AND YOUNG USERS: WARNINGS AND SAFEGUARDS ASSIGNMENT

INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
Collaboration and communication apps have become ubiquitous in everyday functioning, but there
can be risks and benefits to using these web-based tools, especially for children and teens. Few
would question that the Internet substantially influences children and teenagers, yet children and
teens often lack the self-regulation skills needed for decision-making in the complex digital world.
Applications on a smartphone can easily pull children into the digital world where cyberbullying
and the constant availability of sexual content represent potential sources of stress for children.
Apps historically noted as potentially dangerous for children and teens include Snapchat, Whisper,
Blendr, and WhatsApp, yet several of these apps are used to good advantage by many. An
unfortunate reality exists where new apps are continually being developed to look harmless and to
mask the more dangerous apps in use by young people. Careful oversight and monitoring by more
knowledgeable parents and adults are increasingly important. The ability to block inappropriate
apps and content is essential for schools, teachers, and parents.
INSTRUCTIONS
Scenario: You are viewed as an expert in educational technology and have been asked by your
principal to plan and conduct a 10-minute presentation for parents on the possible dangers of social
media apps targeting children. The principal’s goals are to:

  • Inform parents of what is happening in the complicated digital world where children are
    concerned.
  • Demonstrate the types of challenges children are facing with actual recent news stories.
  • Express the importance of parental monitoring.
  • Equip parents with tools they can use for decision-making and monitoring.
  1. For your presentation, identify three or more apps of particular concern for educators and
parents that are potentially dangerous for children and teens. Avoid apps that are already
commonly known (e.g., TikTok, Snapchat, etc.) unless you focus on a new danger recently
identified in the news for these apps. Do your best to identify apps that are new on the scene.
    For each app identified:
  • Provide a brief description along with an image of the app.
  • Reveal two or three possible risks for each app when used by school-age students.
  • Include at least two news items as evidence of the app’s risks and dangers to children.
Limit your browser search to news items published/produced within the last six months.
  1. You must also present information from both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and
your state’s attorney general to support your claims.
    EDUC 730
    a. Using the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s What We Investigate link provided with
this assignment, browse the podcasts, press releases, and videos for resources (current,
within the past 12 months) that address issues related to each of your three apps. In your
presentation, reference and insert a direct link to a minimum of one relevant FBI
resource for each app you cover (a minimum of 3 required).
    b. Using the National Association of Attorneys General link provided with this
assignment, search for your state’s attorney general website. To find the AG for your
state, click on “Find my AG,” then use the “Filter by State” option to select your state.
With a new section of the presentation, include the name of your state’s attorney general
and contact information. and then share examples of information and news items on
your attorney general’s website regarding children and Internet/social media risks. Any
sources pulled from must be current, meaning they were published within the last 12
months. Encourage parents to contact the attorney general to recommend additional
safeguards for children. In your presentation, insert a direct link to any attorney general
    resources referenced.
  2. In the next section of the presentation, discuss warnings and safeguards that should be put in
place for child safety on the internet.
    a. Use personal experience and current news items (published/produced within the last six
months) to support the warnings and safeguards you propose.
    b. Also, use current professional literature (published within the last 12 months) such as
journal articles and research to support your claims. To do this, limit your search in the
Jerry Falwell Library to dissertations, theses, and journal articles.
  3. Conclude your presentation with endorsements of the best parental monitoring tool and content
    blocking tool.
    a. It is suggested you gain actual experience with these two tools by requesting a free trial
    of the tools you select.
    b. In your presentation, briefly defend your recommendations based on features, cost, etc.
Build the slide show portion of your 10-minute presentation using PowerPoint or Google Slides.
Your presentation must include audio narrations recorded within the presentation software’s audio
record feature. The audio portion of your presentation must emphasize the significance of the
concerns that are being discussed in this assignment. The audio quality must also be clear without
distracting ambient noise. There must be smooth audio transitons within the presentation.
The final presentation must be professionally formatted with quality slide design based on
standardbest practices for presentation design. It must include a title slide, references slide(s) for
any sources cited, and a credits slide with any needed copyright attributions for images, etc. Use
current APA formatting for in-text citations and citations within the references and credits slides.
    EDUC 730
To submit this assignment, generate a shareable link to your narrated presentation either through
OneDrive (for PowerPoint) or through the sharing features of Google Slides/Google Drive. Ensure
the permission settings of your shared presentation will allow anyone with the link to view the
presentation. Copy and paste the shareable link to your presentation in the assignment submission
    area for this assignment.
You must review the Apps and Young Users: Warnings and Safeguards Grading Rubric to
understand the areas in which you will be graded for this assignment. Take specific note of how the
10-minute time length requirement is assessed under the “Length” row of the rubric to ensure your

Scenario Assignment

Overview of Summative:
First, you should provide a description of the scenario that you will attempt to support.
Then you will share the questions you would ask during the initial conversation with the
teacher you are coaching.
Specific Assignment Details
For the description of the scenario, be certain to include the following information to
support your reader’s understanding of the area of need:
● Teacher’s experience and other pertinent details, similar to the description in the
examples provided.
● Grade level and student outcome that is a concern
● Time of year and any pertinent data and/or dates,
such as time allotted to coach before the next assessment window or significant data
collection.
The three questions you would ask during your initial conversation should be aligned
with your rationale for the approach you would take in this Instructional Coaching
scenario.
After listing the questions and at least one potential response for each question, you
should include a brief narrative with your rationale for the approach you have selected
and support from the text and/or other professional literature.
The description and the questions should be completed in a .doc file or .pdf that is
formatted in APA.
