In Researching Conflict, Drama and Learning (pp. 13-42). Springer, Singapore. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-13-5916-3_2This article outlines the major components and causes of a conflict, the different approaches that can be used in a conflict and the whole process of handling a conflict. O’Toole et al. (2019) identifies with the fact that a work place is bound to have conflicts either between the management and the workers or among the workers. Either way, these conflicts need to be resolved for the purposes of teamwork and the success of the whole group. According to this article, some of the reasons as to why conflicts may arise in the workplace includes poor management, lack of a proper communication channel, no clear roles assigned for individuals in the work place, harassment and a non-conducive environment for working.
The article has also discussed some of the approaches that can be used in solving these conflicts include creating a proper channel of communication from the top management to the subordinate workers, prioritizing the conflict and seek to find a solution, developing a plan and following it through, and creating a good working environment for the workers or staff. The whole conflict-handling process will include steps such as taking time to listen to the issues of people at the workplace, talk through the issue directly with the parties involved, avoid pointing out people directly and blaming them and lastly gather information from both sides of conflicting parties and always plan ahead.
Williams, C., Moore, E., Williams, C., Jones, R., Bell, R., & Holloway, R. (2019). Using an integrated system approach to manage conflict. Journal of Leadership, Accountability, andEthics, 16(4). https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3453507
In this article, current literature has been examined and the integrated approach of resolving conflicts is being used. Conflict is inevitable in the workplace due to the different cultures, traditions and beliefs that people uphold. This therefore needs quite a good system of management that will oversee the running of the workplace even with these conflicts. A management that is quick to respond to issues before they become problems or conflicts that will be out of hand. The integrated approach identifies communication as the key source of conflict and conflict management and a clear and proper channel of communication to be created. This will be easier for workers to know whom to talk to or who is going to address their issues.
Therefore, gathering information from different managerial personnel it was concluded that communication should always be given the first priority. For instance, the management should be the first to inform the workers of a possible retrenchment instead of rumors going around. It was also discovered that interpersonal communication was the most effective way of handling a conflict between individuals in the workplace. Therefore, this article addresses a number of strategies in communication that could be used to level out conflicts in the work place.
Ma, Z., Lee, Y., & Yu, K. H. (2008). Ten years of conflict management studies: themes, concepts and relationships. International Journal of Conflict Management.
In this research, Ma et al investigates the issue of conflict management for a period of 10 years. This research is mainly based on the journal articles published between 1997 and 2006. Therefore, it is a very wide and inclusive research which involves all the information available about conflict management within that period. During the period which is examined a lot of conflict management styles have also erupted and because of this, a lot of people have embraced some which have worked while others have embraced other methods which never worked and therefore through this source, it is clear which methods have worked and which ones have not. Basically, the research is a summary of conflict management, it not only gives us the methods to use in different circumstances when other methods do not work, it gives us the ability to choose wisely with a wide variety of techniques and knowledge about the rest. Therefore, when choosing the method to use there is a history and a specific record of failure or success got from the different journals analyzed and this makes a company or a person confident that their choice and what they are doing is good.
The article clearly states the challenges which have faced the field of conflict management over time. One of such is the unwillingness of most researchers to publish their work in well known journals. This leaves a lot hidden and not known as some of the best methods of conflict management are left out. The other issue the article states is that companies and organizations are different. Therefore, with the varied structures, company rules and many people to involve solving conflicts becomes a tedious process because of its reliance on so many other parts of the company or organization. Therefore, there is no specific method which works for all.
