Famous Names in Recreation, Tourism and Sport

Spring 2021

30 points

Purpose of assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to develop an understanding of the important figures that have influenced the various leisure fields. Each student will research a different individual and present their findings to the class. Students will be tested on the presented material.

Assignment:

Your presentation should include:

A brief background of the person

His/her philosophy and beliefs about the benefits of recreation and leisure

His/her key accomplishments and contributions to recreation and leisure

Sources should be listed in the notes section of the relevant slides. Exceptions: 1) Sources for quotations should be included on the slides (in-text format placed at end of quote) and 2) Sources for images (e.g., photos, graphs) must be on the slide in which the image appears. Failure to do so may result in a failing grade for the assignment.

Presentation

Each student will give a 5-6 minute PowerPoint presentation. Do not simply read your report/notes. Your presentation will be graded based on quality and accuracy of information, ability to answer questions, and the quality of the presentation itself (e.g. error-free slides, appropriate graphics and/or photos, and speaking skills). Practice your presentation in advance. You will be penalized if you are under the assigned time limit, and stopped if you attempt to go over the time limit.

Note: Presentations must be submitted to the instructor by 8AM on Monday, March 22. I strongly suggest you do not wait until the last minute. In fairness to all students, no changes will be allowed after this time. Students who fail to submit their presentation by this time will not receive credit for the assignment. NO EXCEPTIONS. Technical difficulties are the responsibility of the student.

The presentations will be made available on Blackboard so that all students will have access to the notes.

Due Date: The presentations will be given starting March 22. Presentations will be given in alphabetical order based on the Famous Names (two lists will be posted on Blackboard, one for each section). Any student who is not in class when it is time for their presentation will not receive credit for the assignment.
