President Barrack Obama, the current president of United States, used the slogan “Yes We Can” to steer himself into the office. Globally, nobody except the man himself, or his wife, Michelle Obama, would imagine that the African-American senator from Illinois could make the 44th president of United States of America. In his efforts to secure a chance to get an access to the White House, Obama faced challenges of the diverse nature. His relative political inexperience, his youth and his race formed some of the challenges that Obama had to face before his election into the White House. In addition, Obama’s inexperience in political campaigns and limited sources of the fund to cater for the costs of campaign challenged his political pursuit for president. The campaign strategy involved organization of several grassroots campaigns that aided in earning of delegates votes from the states in America. Internet was a significant campaign strategy of president Obama, which led to mobilization and engagement of youth in the political processes. The internet involved the use of social networks, such as Face book, YouTube (BarackObama.com channel), and Twitter, which received a, considerable number of member subscription. In the social networks, public campaigns for Obama took place, and the strategy was effective since it aimed at direct campaigning to an individual. This led to a remarkable performance of president Obama in the primaries. Key contributing facts for this performance were the grassroots campaigns, successful debates, and brilliant speeches during the campaigns. Martin Luther King speech for advocating racial harmony “I Have a Dream” cannot be ignored for it had a considerable contribution to the success of president Obama in both primaries and general elections.
In declaring for candidacy for president, Obama appreciated the public and made the public feel that they are part and parcel of his campaign. He called for unity among the people through the creation of peace, hope and settling of political divides among the political lines. Obama also gave a life history of what drove him to aspiring for presidency. Obama declaration of what he had planned to deliver to America had an element of involving the public to participate. As Obama stated his endeavors of reshaping the economy, poverty eradication and improvement in the public health care sector, he never subjected himself to the task but to the public in unison. The slogan used in these statements was “We Can Do That”. He further claimed that the campaign was not about him but the whole nation in unison. This created a sense of unison among the public; no wonder, Obama’s public rallies recorded the highest attendance in American history of politics.
President Obama interviews on the press depicted him as a different man in the political arena with different capabilities. In February 27, 2009, in an interview with Lehrer on PBS’s he went on recording claiming that he does not base his decisions on what people think is good but on what he perceives to be better for the human kind. He further criticized the kind of leadership in which the president’s decision receives a critique. In addition, he argued that leadership should see to it that the public follows the leader. These statements made by president Obama led to identification of a special skill and competence in him that had been unexploited; as such, most of the people in America voted in favor of him.
Obama assumed the office duties on a popular jubilation wave that was beyond a normal blush of victory experienced in United States of America. In this, the public from all over the states of America (irrespective of race, creed and color) and his native continent Africa celebrated. In addition, the media trumpeted the wining and election of an African American to the White House, which is perceived to be a powerful house in the world. A remarkable situation of Obama assumption of office is the fact that Obama took office with popularity (67% of public positive opinion) that no other American president had achieved in day one for the last forty years. This led to the establishment of November 4, 2008, as a remarkable day in the American politics, a day that an African-American assumed the most prestigious and powerful office in the world.
