ENG 010
Sarah E. M. Acunzo
Assignment for Paper #3
We have been discussing George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm, where the author uses animal characters to tell a story that can easily relate to human beings. Why do you think Orwell uses animals as characters? What points is he trying to make about people? How can we relate scenes in the book to real life?
Assignment: For this paper, you will choose 2 scenes from the novel that were particularly memorable for you and relate them to real life (do not use any parallel to Hitler or the Russian Revolution).
· For this paper, class work entries #10, #11, and #12 have a lot of the information you need. You must submit them and have them approved before you start your draft. Here is a basic idea for organization, although it is fine for you to take a different approach. Your essay will have a minimum of 5 paragraphs.
Paragraph #1- Introduction- Your thesis statement will be a sentence that states why you think Orwell uses animals and how this book can still be relevant to real life. You will be able to use some of the ideas you wrote for class work #12, question #1.
Paragraph #2- Briefly summarize one scene you chose from the book. Explain the real-life situation that this scene reminds you of. (do not use any parallel to Hitler or the Russian Revolution) You will be able to use the ideas you wrote for class work #10 and expand.
Paragraph #3- Briefly summarize a second scene you chose from the book. Explain the real-life situation that this scene reminds you of. (do not use any parallel to Hitler or the Russian Revolution). You will be able to use the ideas you wrote for class work #11 and expand.
Paragraph #4- Explain what moral lessons your two chosen scenes can teach readers about human behavior and why you think using animals was a good choice for Orwell. You will be able to use your answers to question #2 for class work #12 and expand.
(If you realize that any of the information in paragraphs #2, #3, or #4 need to be in more than 1 paragraph, that’s ok. Your essay can certainly have more than 5 paragraphs.)
Paragraph #5- Conclusion- Rephrase your thesis statement and wrap up your essay.
· Remember that paragraphs and an entire essay share the same structure. Like a good paragraph, an essay also leads in (an introduction), has a main idea (thesis statement), has support for that main idea (body paragraphs) and has closure (a conclusion).
Requirements: Your final draft of your essay that you turn in for me to grade should be a minimum of 5 paragraphs and 2 pages in length (typed and double spaced).
For this paper, since class work #10, #11, #12 are so important, you must submit them to me in order and have them approved before you can start your draft of this essay (as stated above). The information you gather for these three classworks will make it much easier to write your draft.
